This is a four song sampler from our upcoming album "Avoid The Pier At Night"

About two years after the release of our first album, Off Dubbat, we are proud to present a newly evolved sound. This album has the song quality and structure of our first record (and more), but has been executed much more successfully. The recording of this album was done entirely independently; while making our first album we learned the process, and for this one we began to really get the hang of it, making albums that is. It was not recorded with a theme in mind, it ended up having a sort of cohesive something tying all the songs together. It was a sort of dark, psychedelic humor; making something as creepy as possible and then laughing at it. This really shows in the title track of the song.

To record, we set up a home studio in Kyle’s basement in Bridgewater, MA, where we did all of the tracking: drums, bass, guitar and some keyboards (with the exception of ‘Hot Thursday’). Luckily for us, this basement is lined with bookshelves that act as sound proofing; creating a room with pretty good acoustics, and a good place to record. It was executed in a live fashion, all of the basic instruments being played and recorded at the same time. Most of the vocals and overdubs were recorded after in a closet, padded for soundproofing and safety. The mixing and dubbing was done on Protools.

This album was recorded and worked on sporadically throughout the course of about 2 years. Many of the songs were re-recorded later on with the goal of something more perfect. After years of prodding at it, giving it space and attacking it, we have finally produced what we would like to think of as an end product. This album represents us as a band, and during the years that we spent working on it, these songs became the bulk of our live sets.

Improvisation has always been a huge part of our repertoire. Some of our most interesting and passionate moments of music have been deep into a jam. We find it to be freeing and a whole new way to communicate; bringing in familiar sounding themes, or new moods into what we are playing to create something entirely new and unique. In late 2011 and into 2012 we have found ourselves using jamming as meditative moments in live sets and to take a break from the structure of our songs. We all agree that the jams are where you see the true Dubbest, and we urge people to go online (archive.org, dubbest.bandcamp.com, ????) and listen to our live recordings. We record almost every show, and we always put them online, and each performance is entirely different.

about

Dubbest Boston

Since 2009, Dubbest has been forging its own path through the heavily forested reggae landscape, expertly infusing roots traditionalism with a refreshing improvisational savvy that calls to mind not only the studio experimentation of pioneering dub producers Osbourne “King Tubby” Ruddock and Lee “Scratch” Perry but also the real-time exploration of jam bands like the Grateful Dead and Phish. ... more
